Experiencing periods of loneliness is a normal part of life. But prolonged loneliness or isolation can take a toll on a person’s physical and mental health. Research suggests that loneliness affects a person’s health as much as traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. LGBT older adults are twice as likely as non-LGBT seniors to live alone, facing an elevated risk of isolation and the health effects that come with it.
